Useful Hints
With the decision to buy an overseas property made, one of your priorities should be to obtain the correct level of insurance. These are the main things you must consider:
- How good is your grasp of the local language? If you are not fluent it might be difficult to understand the level of cover provided by a local policy. This could prove costly if you don't have the cover you thought you signed up for.
- Local insurance policies may appear to be cheaper than products offered by UK insurers, but UK insurers tend to offer wider cover and include useful extras like emergency travel cover.
- You should insure for the rebuilding cost of your property, and remember this is often less than the market value of the property. However don't be tempted to insure for less than the true value of rebuilding your property and replacing its contents. If you have to make a claim then your insurer may not settle your claim in full if you are underinsured.
